sleep disorder

Tag details

A sleep disorder is a medical condition that affects the sleep patterns of an individual. Recurring trouble sleeping can turn into an impairing disorder because it interferes with normal psychological, physical and emotional functioning.

Doctors usually carry out a sleep study (also called a polysomnography) to determine if a patient is suffering from a sleeping disorder. Difficulty sleeping can sometimes be a symptom that may indicate a number of psychological issues (including teeth grinding and night terrors). However, when no actual cause can be identified, sleep disruptions are gathered under the generic term insomnia.

People sometimes take sleeping pills (also called hypnotics or soporifics) to induce drowsiness when sleep does not occur naturally. Because most drugs in this category are classified as psychoactive, they are normally taken as per doctor's prescription.

Some of the more common sleep disorders include delayed sleep phase syndrome, primary insomnia, narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome and parasomnia.
