SMS (Short Message Service), or "text messaging" as it is commonly called, is one of the most ubiquitous communication methods in the entire world. Everyone from grandmas and grandpas to little kids in elementary school is doing it these days. In fact, you are going to be hard-pressed to find someone who has not "texted" at least once before in their life. It has been said that SMS is the new Instant Messenger, and, in fact, in 2008 over 4 trillion SMS text messages were sent!

Most SMS are transmitted via a cell phone (sometimes called a handy in parts of Europe) or other mobile devices. These text messages or notes are limited to 160 characters. This is done so that the messages can fit into the existing signaling formats. So, if you are one of these people who are into writing novels when you communicate with someone, you had better stick to email.

Each text message or SMS costs the average user 11 cents (charged by the cell phone company). This seems a little egregious since it costs the phone company almost nothing to send the text. Needless to say, it can get very costly if you text a lot and are not on the unlimited plan. Bloggers speaking about SMS can be found at sites like synergetics-sms and SMS Blog.
