Snowboarding's early roots are blurry but it's generally accepted to have evolved from surfers and skateboarders looking to recreate their sports in a winter environment. Snowboarding maintained relatively unknown to most of America until the 1997 ESPN Winter X Games brought national attention to what the top athletes were able to accomplish on their snowboards. The following year's Olympics in Nagano, Japan would be snowboarding's coming out party to the world.

Today's top snowboard personalities, such as Shaun White, are highly sought after brands, walking a fine line between business savvy and sellout. Snowboarding now influences all aspects of modern youth culture, from music to clothing to video games and are looked up to by kids and adults for their on and off snow exploits.

As it's primarily a winter sport the blogosphere's attention to snowboarding has a strong seasonal bias.  In late winter and early spring blogs light up with sneak previews and catalog scans of the following season's new snowboard gear and accessories.

Summer is a relatively quiet period, with the bulk of the infrequent posts coming from film crews in the Southern Hemisphere and year round backcountry snowboarders. The blogosphere starts to buzz again as the long summer days turn to cool fall nights and the snow begins to fall once again.
