social
The term social refers to that which is characterized by interactivity and gregarious behavior. Organisms that live collectively in groups are considered social beings. When applied to complex human societies, the term social lends itself to a variety of meanings, but will usually encompass government policies that apply resources in matters of public interest, such as infrastructure, social security, education, and so on.
Social media refers to web based technologies that enable complex forms of interactivity between users, such as interactive dialogue and the sharing of user generated content. Due to their increasing popularity and widespread accessibility of Internet, social media applications have revolutionized the way individuals, organizations and communities interact with each other. Consequently, website owners may use social media sites to gain online traffic or popularity. Social media marketing is usually centered on gaining public attention and encouraging users to talk about and share specific content in their own online communities.
Cell phone usage has also become a benefit to social media marketing, in that it allows people to post and repost comments made about a product that is being promoted. In a sense, social media websites act as a modern version of "word of mouth", whereby potential buyers can find out about a product from others within their online network of friends. Through social media websites, companies can keep in touch with their clients, as well as launch promotional campaigns that can increase a company's popularity even further.
Micro-blogging sites like Twitter allow companies to promote products on an individual level. Thanks to the character limit of tweets, companies can provide short presentations of their products that potential buyers are much more likely to read. Detailed, profile-based social networking websites allow for a broader advertising strategy, where companies can post images, videos, and longer descriptions for their products. Consequently, people can "like" their content and help popularize the product.
Blogs enable companies to provide very detailed descriptions of their products, as well as tips, advice and "behind the scenes" information that buyers may otherwise not be aware of. Blogs can also be updated frequently by connecting them to other social media platforms.
You'll find bloggers talking about social marketing at sites like The Twitter Blog.
