Social media, social networking, or social web - whatever you want to call it, it's the two-way communication and user-generated content tools (thanks to the introduction of web 2.0 technologies) that make our online experiences more social.

Social marketing is a way for marketers to use social web sites and tools to find people who share their interests and to present them with products or services that they may be looking to find.

By listening and engaging in conversations, businesses and individuals are able to offer advice and position themselves as credible and reliable sources of information. They can also post unique content (with targeted keywords, anchor text and backlinks) to reinforce their authority on a subject, and at the same time assist in their SEO efforts.

Marketers can use networking sites (Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn), media sites (Flickr and YouTube), social bookmarking sites (del.icio.us, Digg and StumbleUpon), forums, blogs, microblogs (Twitter), games, wikis and more to reach their target audiences and engage them.
