Social Software defines a very broad category of computer programs. They can be summed up as programs that allow people to communicate and interact with each other online or in a local computer network.

Many different types of programs and online services fit in that category from instant messaging applications like MSN or Yahoo Messenger over forums, chatrooms and wikis to blogs, online games and applications that can be used collaboratively.

They all have in common that users can interact with each other on the platforms or directly in the software programs.

Even social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace or Twitter are generally seen as social software.

Security is in those environments of uttermost importance as malicious users use social engineering to attack other users of the service or software.

It is for instance not recommended to hand out a Facebook login or any other login or personal information to other users even if they seem to be legitimate or friends.
