For the longest time, if you used solar heating you were considered a poodle-walking, silk-wearing, mint-munching, Barbara Streisand-listening, tree hugger.

As global warming and energy efficiency has become the hot button issue in social and political circles throughout the world, solar heating is becoming very much in vogue. People are realizing that by utilizing solar energy, society can provide space, process, and water heating in much cheaper and more efficient ways.

Solar heating a home does not require electrical or mechanical equipment and simply depends on the design and architecture of the house to collect, store, and distribute heat throughout the entire house.

A common household solar heating system consists of a solar panel with a heat transfer fluid of some kind flowing through it to transport the heat energy collected to somewhere useful—like a hot water tank or household radiator. The solar panel is usually located somewhere with good light levels throughout the day, often on the roof of the house. A pump of some sort pushes the heat transfer liquid through the panel and the heat is transferred from the panel to a storage container.
