sopa
SOPA is an acronym used for the Stop Online Piracy Act, which is a new bill that was introduced to the House of Representatives of the United States Congress on October 26, 2011. The bill was introduced by Lamar S. Smith, and a group of 12 other bipartisan congressmen.
Also known as the Internet Piracy Bill, SOPA threatens to substantially diminish the rights of internet users to link to or post copyrighted material. This is done by essentially expanding the ability of United States law enforcement to fight against online trafficking of intellectual property and counterfeit goods.
According to SOPA, unauthorized streaming of copyrighted materials would become a crime with a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison, whilst internet services which act against streaming or trafficking websites can receive legal immunity.
Supporters claim that this bill protects revenues for content creators, as well as jobs within their industry. However, opponents say that the bill constitutes a form of internet censorship and would allow for other abuses, including threatening free speech and infringing on First Amendment rights.
