soy
Soy is a product created from soybeans that has many uses. Soybeans are a legume that has the ability to grow in many different types of soils making them easier to cultivate and wider in availability. Soybeans are also very useful because they can be rotated with other crops in different seasons to add nitrogen back to the soil. Soy crops are grown commercially on a large scale to meet up with the demand on the market.
Soy can be used to create a replacement for meat called tofu and can also be used as a replacement for dairy products. Soy protein powder is also a popular health food supplement that can be used in a vegetarian diet plan as an alternative to whey, egg, or casein protein.
Soy can be turned into soybean oil which through the process of hydrogenation can then be solidified to create a soy wax. Fragrance oils can be then be added to create scented soy candles that burn for several hours longer than regular wax candles.
With the continual advances in technology there are always new uses for soy like in plastics and lubricants making soy a very “green” product for the future. You can read about the many new uses for soy and what is in the works for the future at Soy New Uses.
