The term Spanish can refer to anything that is about the country of Spain, for example, the people, the way of life etc. Mainly however, the term Spanish is used when referring to the language spoken in Spain. One of the oldest languages, it has its background heavily based on Latin and therefore the Spanish vocabulary is one of the oldest on record along with the English and French vocabularies both of which also are based at least in some part on Latin. The language is also the predominant language of Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica and many more South American countries.

The Spanish language, often called Castilian is Romance language with roots in the Kingdom of Castile. Today Castilian is one of a variety of language dialects in the region.
