ssd
A solid state drive uses solid state memory to store data. Solid state in this context means that the drive has no moving parts in contrast to electro-mechanical hard drives which are currently dominating the computer world.
Modern solid state drives have several advantages and disadvantages when compared to hard drives. The advantages include a faster random access time, faster startup, silent operations and the ability to endure extreme conditions in which hard drives would normally fail. The disadvantages include the higher price per Gigabyte, performance degradation over time (which is countered by trim and garbage collection) and lower capacities than hard drives.
Major advancements are currently made in the development of new Solid State Drives that reduce the negative aspects of using a SSD in comparison to a standard hard drive.
