Is, are, and am are some of the state of being verbs. In this usage of the word state, it states, or tells that something is. There are a few other usages of the word state, depending upon the context in which it is used.


State
can mean the condition something is in. When a policeman pulls someone over on suspicion of drunk driving, he wants to find out the person's state of mind. There needs to be a determination whether the person is behaving in an altered state of mind that may be cause for bringing harm to others.


State
can also mean a marked and recorded territory, as in a specific location within our nation. A state background check is a searching of records for criminal activity and other notable files on a person's history within the state.
