Stretch marks are caused by a sudden or excessive stretching of the skin due to pregnancy, extreme weight gain or loss, and even puberty. Less common causes are the over production of a hormone called a corticosteroid and even as a result of disease such as Cushing’s Syndrome and other conditions. Men also get stretch marks but they are less obvious because they are usually covered by hair.

The most likely section of the blogger population who are going to be interested in finding out about stretch marks are of course those new moms-to-be. Stretch marks are tears in the lower layer of your skin which consists of elastic supportive tissue to help the skin to stretch. When the skin is stretched to its limit, it tears slightly allowing blood vessels to show through. Stretch marks most often occur on the abdomen, appearing first as streaks similar to your skin color. The pigmentation in these streaks gradually fades and is replaced with glistening silvery lines of scar tissue.
