The term style can lend itself to a variety of meanings. In the broadest sense, it defines a manner of doing something, or a particular characteristic of a person or object.

When discussing works of fiction, style refers to a series of codified gestures by which an author tells a story. It is considered one of the fundamental aspects of fiction, alongside characterization, plot and setting. In the visual arts, style defines the range of aesthetic values that are often shared among artists belonging to the same artistic movement or era. The same definition can be applied to other fields of human activity, including architecture, design, and fashion.

The term style can also be used to describe the stalk structure of plants in botany, genres of music, different types of films and television series, but also publications.

A diverse range of styles exist in fashion, and they can be influenced by a number of factors, such as culture, exposure to the media, financial status, education and more. The closely related term "dress code" refers to a set of written and unwritten rules that dictate how a person should adjust their attire and overall appearance to fit the occasion or even they are attending. Consequently, there is a distinction to be made between streetwear, casual wear, Indiemode style, business casual, smart casual, business or informal, and black tie or semi-formal dresses.

For example, in Western societies, casual wear consists of clothing items that emphasize on personal comfort over presentation, and may include polo shirts, jeans, and sneakers. Business casual and smart casual styles are similar, but will a bit more tidy-looking and formal. For example, men might wear a long-sleeve shirt instead of a T-shirt, a belt and trousers. Business and informal outfits involve suits and different types of ceremonial garments, such as royal robes, military costumes, suits of armor, liturgical robes, court and academic garments, and more.

Different styles of clothing could also reflect the social status of a person, their occupation, their ethnic or political affiliation, their religion and even their gender. In Western societies, the wearing of high-heeled shoes coupled with form-fitting or revealing dresses, excessive jewelry and over-the-top make-up and perfume, is considered to be an act of sexual display.
