Bloggers often submit articles to directories, social bookmarking sites, or blog carnivals to get a wider distribution of their information, and generate more traffic for their blogs.
Some article directories and carnivals are 'harvested' by sites that steal the content and remove the valuable backlinks.
The Internet blogging community is looking for possible solutions to this content theft problem. On one hand, content creators want more publicity and wider readership. On the other hand, they do not want their content stolen or backlinks deleted.
Search engines are known to penalize site that feature "duplicate content," apparently an attempt to avoid rewarding sites with stolen content. Those penalties are applied to sites that feature submitted articles, too, if the content is deemed to be the same.
