subscription

A subscription can refer to anything from the newspaper you read every day to your personal beliefs. If you pray to Jesus or Allah, it could be said that you subscribe to that particular religious belief system. When you pay the paperboy every month, it is because you are paying for the cost of having the news delivered to your doorstep.

And that darn cable bill you love to gripe about each month? Yup. Also part of your subscription to receive those hundreds of fancy pants channels that you never watch.

Most often though, a subscription means that you are receiving your favorite magazines in the mail, usually a week or two before they hit your corner newsstand or the checkout line at the supermarket. Subscription rates depend on the amount of magazines you receive during a given period, usually over one or two years. Rates are most often charged by the number of magazine issues (usually 12 or 24 if it's a monthly magazine, or 52 if it's a weekly) or by an agreed-upon time period you'll be receiving them (generally anywhere from six months to two years or more).

The advantages of a magazine subscription are twofold. For convenience, you can't beat it. So, if you simply can't wait to read that latest issue of Rolling Stone or SI, a subscription offers immediate gratification. The other factor is cost, as most subscriptions come with a reduced rate from the over-the-counter cost of a single issue.
