Long gone are the days when John Denver penned these carefree lyrics. Sunshine has become "persona non grata" ever since skin cancer really began to wreak havoc on our skin.

Whereas it was once considered a great idea to go outside and "get some sun," now parents don't allow their children to go outside unless they are first slathered in 30 SPF (Sun Protection Factor).

However, sunshine, and more specifically, Vitamin D, has been in the news a lot lately as the nutritionists and doctors find that more and more people lack good old fashioned sunshine and fresh air. News Flash: turns out we as a society are spending way too much time inside on our computers, watching television, and playing video games. So, maybe the pendulum is swinging back the other direction.

Although skin cancer is still a very real threat, take a moment to walk on the beaches of La Palma or lie next to the pool and read a good book. It's time we all got reacquainted with our old friend Mr. Sunshine. Bloggers speaking about sunshine can be found at sites like cs.astronomy.
