A superfood is one that has a high content of phytochemicals (otherwise known as phytonutrients) that supposedly bring about excellent health benefits when eaten. A few of the phytochemicals that many of the superfoods have in common are flavonoids, carotenoids, and isoflavones. These phytonutrients are high in antioxidant power, and are said to possibly prevent degenerative diseases, strengthen the immune system, and have antibacterial and antiviral properties.

The term superfood is not commonly used by the scientific community or dietitians, usually being left to the playing field of marketers and the general public. Superfoods that get the most exposure include both fruits and vegetables. Of the fruits, the blueberry, the cranberry, the acai berry, and even the tomato are all considered superfoods. Some of the superfood veggies include spinach, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, collard greens, and bok choy.
