survey

A survey can be used to collect statistical data. Surveying is also the process of "looking over" someone or something.

When making reference to land surveying, it involves using GPS technology to "look over" the Earth using satellites and other means to determine boundaries for creating maps and defining land ownership, etc.

A statistical survey involves collecting data, usually opinions from individuals, in order to make decisions. These surveys are used heavily to help business owners know where to focus their resources for product creation and improvement.

With the advent of the Internet, a whole new opportunity opened for people to get paid for online surveys. Big companies, like Chrysler, Burger King, Subway, and thousands of others are paying individuals for their opinions on products, services, etc.
