Swimming; or moving through water can be divided into a variety of "strokes" or types of swimming movements. These may include the backstroke, the butterfly, front crawl or the breast stroke.

Swimmers may use a variety of methods to move through the water, although in competitive swimming the stroke must be executed within the regulatory requirements.


Swimming is popular as recreation, a form of exercise and as a competitive sport. Swimming has become a popular event at the Olympics. Competitive swimming began in the 1800s in Europe mostly using the breaststroke. Swimming was added as a competitive event in the Olympics in 1896. Unlike hot tubs, swimming pools
are most often lengthy to accommodate for what are known as laps.
