Swingers is an old term that can refer to people who like to swing dance. This was a very popular type of dance for swing style jazz music, from the 1920s to the 1950s, when rock music gained mainstream attention. It was a social activity with numerous forms and special moves, and it could be danced either alone, in pairs or in groups. Competitions were often organized, where people could exhibit skills such as timing, technique and teamwork.

Swingers
can also refer to a type of couples' lifestyle that involves non-monogamous behavior where the two partners in a committed relationship agree to engage in sexual activities with other couples, generally for recreational purposes. The term mostly applies to male/females couples that engage with other male/female couples. It is called "swinging" since each of the persons involved will be swapping their usual partner for one of the members of another couple.

This activity can occur in a number of contexts, either between friends or at parties, and can be spontaneous or planned, or even as part of swingers' clubs. There are numerous Internet resources for interested couples, furnished with practical advice, risks, rules and much more.

While this phenomenon has a largely undocumented history that has spun hundreds of years, it has occurred as an encouraged social practice in various world cultures. In modern times however, swinging has become widely discussed as a result of the 20th century sexual revolution, which included feminist movements that encouraged women to view sexual activity as more than a means of bearing offspring, along with the introduction of contraceptives and notions such as safe sex.

Since many variations exist, the core idea of swinging is the full consent and participation of both partners. Since this is done in mutual agreement, principles such as loyalty or commitment should not be threatened, while most couples even claim that swinging can strengthen a relationship and cultivate trust and honesty between partners. A US survey addressing the visitors of an online swinger's club has revealed that the majority of people who have engaged in swinging believe that their relationships have become happier as a result, and that it has added excitement to their lives. Canadian swingers who have agreed to be interviewed on the subject have also claimed that they are not tempted to have affairs, while women said that swinging made them feel more confident.
