Remember those old cigarette ads about it being better to fight than switch?

The truth is that in the real world, a switch can either help things run smoothly, or conversely, be the reason that an appliance, computer or other electronic device does not work properly.

It’s no wonder that the company behind all those ads featuring smokers with black eyes is no longer in business.

In today’s high tech world, there are thousands of types of switches. Some can be changed by consumers while others may require professional replacement. You can find toggle switches, push-button switches, selector switches, joystick versions, proximity versions, and many other types.

One type of switch that is common in the PC industry is a KVM switch. KVM is an acronym which stands for the words keyboard, video, and mouse. So it is little wonder that this switch is a common one with computers. This switch is used to control multiple computers, and in some cases it can be reversed as well. Some say it’ll even cure cancer (or at least remove those black eyes).

There are console ports on the device so that the mouse, keyboard, and possibly audio can be connected. Other ports are used to connect other computers to the same device. This switch can be passive or active, with initial models only available as a passive device. They can also be found for use as a remote device as well.

You’ll find bloggers who’d rather switch than fight at sites like kvmswitchreviews and KVMStuff.
