symptoms of autism
Symptoms of Autism depend on where on the Spectrum of Autism the affected individual lies.
Autism is the most common condition in a group of developmental disorders known as Autism Spectrum Disorders. Autism usually appears during the first three years of life and affects individuals differently and to varying degrees.
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke there are three distinctive behaviors which characterize Autism. Autistic children have difficulties with social interaction, problems with verbal and nonverbal communication, and repetitive behaviors or narrow, obsessive interests. These behaviors can range in impact from mild to disabling.
These symptoms may present in the form of lack of or delay in spoken language, repetitive use of language and/or motor mannerisms (e.g., hand-flapping, twirling objects), little or no eye contact, lack of interest in peer relationships, lack of spontaneous or make-believe play, or persistent fixation on parts of objects.
