A tablet is a dosage form used for medication and supplements, alongside pills, capsules, drinks and syrups.

The tablet was also the medium commonly used in antiquity for inscriptions and printing. One of the earliest known forms of writing mediums include the clay tablet, the wooden tablet, the wax tablet and the stele, which was a type of inscripted funerary monument widely used in ancient Egypt and ancient Greece.

Nowadays, when not talking about medicine, the term tablet is mostly used to refer to the tablet PC, which is a mobile computer, larger than a smartphone, and integrated into a touchscreen that can be operated by using an onscreen virtual keyboard or a digital pen.

Tablet computers provide many advantages to users who require more abilities than can be provided by a smartphone, but who would also like something smaller and easier to navigate than a typical laptop computer.

Some of the advantages of tablets include lighter weight, a touch-screen environment that makes navigation easier, more precise digital painting and image editing, a longer battery life than most notebooks or laptops, as well as more precision when using a stylus. Some of the disadvantages of tablet computers, as identified by owners, include higher costs, slower input speed when using the virtual keyboard, weaker video capabilities, small display, lack of keyboard and no room for wrist rest. As a result, business oriented tablet PCs have recorded slow sales since their release on the market in 2001.


Tablet PCs come in a range of shapes and sizes, from the largest tablet personal computers to the smallest PDAs. Slate tablets resemble a writing slate and incorporate small, 8.4 to 14 inch wide LCD touchscreens. They are commonly used in the hospitality industry, in health care and in aviation.

Booklet tablets use dual-touchscreen LCDs and fold like a book. Most such devices are also equipped with writing recognition capabilities, and are designed primarily for project planning, day planning, e-reading, as well as video and live-TV display.

Convertible tablets resemble laptops in that they are larger, bulkier and come with an attached keyboard. However, because of their joint screen that can be rotated and folded down, convertible tablets are physically weak and more prone to breaking than regular laptops.

Hybrid tablets combine the features of both slate and convertible tablets and use detachable keyboards that make the devices more adaptable and able to withstand continuous use.
