The initial and ongoing success of the Apple iPad has guaranteed that tablet PCs will be a seriously considered product for quite awhile. Also with its success, it is establishing what will become the de facto features for a tablet PC to have.

Prior to the iPad, the tablet PC was finding its way into the consumer market. Some tablet PCs have been scaled down versions of laptops, in terms of size and power. In this format, an actual keyboard is usually included.

However, the basic concept that set apart tablet PCs from laptops was the idea that the screen was touch-interactive, not only by finger pressure, but sensitive to a stylus. As such, it could process information like writing on a tablet.

One feature that is emerging as important, due to the iPad, is built-in wi-fi. The tablet PC becomes more than an electronic notepad. It can become a traveling reference with the ability to access the Internet to search for information. Or it can become a portable office, by accessing web-based applications or the office network system in order to work remotely. The tablet PC is becoming a part of our mobile lifestyle.
