Taiwan, also known as the Republic of China (ROC), is an island country in East Asia with a population of 23 million, many of whom are of Chinese descent. Its capital city is Taipei, with a population of 2.6 million. Roughly one million Taiwanese also reside in mainland China.

Taiwan's politics are complex, largely because of a dispute with the Communist People's Republic of China (PRC), who claim the country as their own, and consider themselves the successor state to the ROC. Because of the complicated politics between the two entities, Taiwanese citizens can find the process of acquiring a China Visa to be a difficult one (although this situation has become more relaxed in recent years).

Taiwan's major export industries include agricultural food products like pork and rice. But it is by far the consumer electronics market that accounts for the largest part of Taiwan's economic growth (which has also been called "the Taiwan Miracle"). Conversely, Taiwan has also been accused of being a prime source for the underground market for bootleg software.
