A taxi, or a taxicab, is a vehicle for hire used for the transportation of one or more passengers, usually within the bounds of a city. Unlike public transportation, taxi drivers will pick up passengers at any time of the day and take them between locations of their choice.

There are 4 popular types of taxicabs, namely hackney cabs (or hailed taxies), private hire cabs, taxibuses and limousines. Even though regulation, hiring and dispatching techniques may differ from country to country, some base characteristics are common to all taxicab companies around the world. For example, to enable dispatching, monitor their drivers and keep track of vehicle maintenance, taxi companies often use fleet management and vehicle tracking systems.


Taxi services usually make use of automobiles, but in some countries different types of human-powered vehicles are also used. Pedicabs and animal-powered cabs are popular especially in less developed countries where automobiles would be too expensive to purchase and maintain.
