Tea originally referred to one species of shrub that was cultivated in China-Camellia sinensis-commonly called the black tea shrub. Over the years, the plant intermingled with herbs from many cultures, and tea took on a broader meaning to include an assortment of herbs. Tea now refers to a beverage made from the leaves, flowers, berries, seeds, roots, rhizomes, or bark of a plant, steeped in hot water.


Black, Green, Oolong, White,and Pu Erh Tea are derived from the Camellia sinensis. They are distinguished by the processes they undergo to acquire their unique and distinct flavor.


Herbal teas are made from the roots, leaves, flowers, berries, bark, or seeds of herbs, not tea leaves. Herbal teas include such varieties as Mint, Chamomile, and Lavender.


Other types:
Rooibos is made from a South African red bush.
Mate is made from the leaves and twigs of the yerba mate plant; used as a coffee replacement.

Blends are made from a combination of teas; detox and Chai are popular blends.
