Texas Holdem (or hold 'em) is a popular variation of the standard poker game. It dates back to the early 1900s, and the Texas State Legislature officially acknowledges that the birthplace of Texas Holdem poker is the town of Robston, in Texas, United States.

The game setup consists of the dealer placing 5 cards face-up on the board, in the middle of the table and shared by all players (also known as community cards), and dealing two cards to each player.

The 5 community cards can be divided into "the flop" - which designates the first 3 dealt cards, and "the river" or "the turn", which designates the two additional dealt cards. Throughout the game, the players can check, bet, raise or fold after each deal. Betting can occur at any moment during the deal.

The objective of the player, as with all other poker games, is to gain control of the amount of money or chips thrown in the game (typically called "the pot"), depending on the type of hand they are holding, or on their best guess on the type of hands the other players are holding. This means that Texas Holdem is as much a game of chance as it is a game of strategy.

The pot can either be won by one player after each hand, or it can be split among players in the event that a tie is reached. A player can also win the pot when all players but one fold, leading the remaining player to win the pot without having to show their hand. Additionally, a "showdown" can occur – a situation when only two players remain in the game. They will compete against each other, playing the best poker hands they can make with their two cards and the 5 community cards available on the table.

Texas Holdem is also available for play online, although this creates several physical limitations to the game play. As a result, many online tutorials have been created showing people how to play Texas Hold'em poker, and at the same time showing the differences between the standard and online versions of the game.

An Xbox Live Arcade version of Texas Holdem was developed in 2006 by TikGames, and it features numerous single player modes, tournaments, and various scenarios.
