Text messages are a popular form of communicating in the digital era. "Texting" involves using the Short Message Service (SMS) via mobile phones to send short (160 characters or fewer) messages to your recipient.

While most modern phones have SMS capabilities, the Blackberry has become synonymous with non-verbal communication like texting and emailing. Many companies have used texting as a way to utilize a possible social networking aspect, Twitter being the biggest.

The popularity of text messages has drawn concern, especially given its repetitive nature. Arthritis and so-called "Blackberry thumb" have been attributed to the practice. Another concern is the evolving shorthand language that is developing with users constantly trying to type more quickly. France is very sensitive to its language and is extremely concerned that its young population is destroying its language with their constant text messaging.
