For some reason, "the" is a pretty popular tag. A guess as to the reason why? Maybe because in some places in the Blogosphere you are supposed to separate your tags by commas and in some places you are required to separate them by spaces. If that is the case, when separating tags by spaces, the gets left all by itself sometimes and many entries are tagged with it. If you tried to tag something with the weekend or the military service, the would stand all alone.

"The" is an article and an adjective (so are a and an). Sometimes the word "the" is placed in front of a person's name to identify them as a VIP, or otherwise the only person with that name who another person is familiar with. For example, if Elvis Presley were to appear somewhere in public (again... for the thousandth time already), a gullible person might inquire about the appearance in the following manner: "You mean 'The' Elvis Presley?"

Although the is pretty generic, it is often used when those in communication with each other know what the the is. If Fred said to Ted, "Look at the nice latex mattress," Both Ted and Fred would probably have an understanding as to which latex mattress the was referring to.
