Searching for otherness in media images

From Racialicious (thanks Stuff White People Do for the link): "I grew up trying to spot the otherness in whites-such as Janet on "Three's Company" or the star of "Wonder Woman," who, it turns out, is half-Mexican-because I was hungry to see myself represented in a medium in which my kind was mostly invisible. ...

Received this via email.  It’s so true in so many ways: A biker is riding his Harley by the zoo, when he sees a little girl leaning into the lion’s cage.  Suddenly, the lion grabs her by the cuff of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to slaughter her, under the eyes of her screaming parents.

Why Tennessee’s blogosphere is well connected

    http://thinktrain.net/ 2008/ 08/ 20/ why-tennessees-blogosphere-is-well-connecte…

Jennifer Peebles is right to credit Glenn Reynolds for his major role in inspiring Tennessee’s active and ample blogosphere, but I think the original NashvilleIsTalking site is a big reason why our blogosphere is as connected as it is: Welcome to the Tennessee political blogosphere: where citizen journalists, amateur pundits and wiseacres with broadband access endlessly type and snipe.

    McCain Ahead?

    http://gitell.wordpress.com/ 2008/ 08/ 20/ mccain-ahead/

Reuters reports its new poll that shows John McCain leading Barack Obama by 5 points. Just as I wrote yesterday that the race in key swing states, such as Pennsylvania, is far closer than the media perception, I’m not buying into the idea of a 5 point McCain lead.

Some Scientific Sense on Climate Change

    http://www.billmuehlenberg.com/ 2008/ 08/ 20/ some-scientific-sense-on-climate-c…

Normally it is hard to get a word in edgewise on the climate change debate. The mainstream media mostly features true believers, and seldom gives the doubters a run. But miracles do happen on occasion. On Sunday night 60 Minutes actually allowed a dissenting scientist to speak on the issue.

Seven rues for a corporate presence on Twitter

    http://www.thewavingcat.com/ 2008/ 08/ 20/ seven-rues-for-a-corporate-presence-o…

Twitter still seems to be one of the bigger mysteries for many folks out there, particularly in the corporate sphere. No surprise, it’s one of those phenomena that aren’t easily understood at a first glance. (When looking at a few hundred web 2.0 services for a study I was working on, Twitter was one of the very few - maybe the only one - I thought wasn’t even worth signing up for.
