Theology (theos+logos: god-discourse), an integral aspect of any systematic religion, is the study of God or many gods. Theologians are typically engaged in scriptural exegesis, apologetics, and diverse forms of argument and analysis on the doctrine of the religion; Christianity in particular is well-known for this.

Theological disagreements often lead to the formation of schismatic branches holding their distinctive doctrines as a standard measure of orthodoxy. Blog and forum discussions are often a painful testimony to amateur theologians bickering with each other or confronting atheist tactics, even if proper theological debate is also a known online phenomena.

Fundamental interpretations of theology lead to radical clashes with society. A topic much discussed is Islamic fundamentalism and the deployment of terrorism. Medieval witch hunts and Hindu nationalists' sabotage of Valentine's Day share something in common – a foundation in theology.

Theology has also helped many to better understand matters of spirit, coming to terms with life and their chosen God or gods, as an abundance of online testimonies reveals. Theology has played a significant role in upholding culture and societies in the past, even if its continued relevance is debated in the Information Age bent on science and all things verifiable. We're obviously looking at a two-edged sword.

When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. The LORD is near to the brokenhearted, and saves the crushed in spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous; but the LORD delivers him out of them all. He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken. Evil shall slay ...

  • Why These 66 Books?

    The CripplegateAuthority Authority: 506
Have you ever looked at your Bible and wondered, “Why do we regard these 66 books, and no others, as comprising the inspired Word of God?” That is a critically important question, of course, since there are many today who would deny that these 66 books are truly the complete canon of Scripture. The Roman ...

  • What God Says and Doesn’t Say

    Authority Authority:
(For the sermon that this is an excerpt from, go here.) God has spoken so well in Christ that even the silence around his word is eloquent, informative, communicative. We can learn from that silence in many ways, but here is one way: Because of what God has definitively said, we know there are certain [...]

  • Is it ever ok to lie?

    The CripplegateAuthority Authority: 506
Is it ever not a sin to lie? Or—to let the double negative cancel itself out and get right to the chase—does God ever put you in a position where sinning is the right thing to do? This question is as bothersome as it is perennial. It invariably comes attached to this hypothetical: say you lived in Nazi Germany, ...

(For the sermon that this is an excerpt from, go here.) God communicates. He speaks loudly sometimes, taking solemn oaths. He hints sometimes, giving us just enough information to draw us in.
