thermography
Thermography is the science of any infrared imaging or video. This type of imaging has the ability to detect radiation in the infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Essentially, it produces thermograms, or images of that radiation.
Although thermography has been used extensively by military personnel (i.e. warm objects – like humans – stand out well against cooler backgrounds when viewed through a thermographic camera at night), the technology is now available to the common man.
The price tag is not cheap. Expect to pay between $4,000 and $6,000 for a thermographic camera. However, with one of these cameras you can see a visual picture of temperatures over large areas, find deteriorating (i.e. higher temperature components) prior to their failure, observe areas which are inaccessible or hazardous to go, find defects in shafts, pipes, and other metal or plastic parts, and, most importantly, to see better in dark areas! Because infrared radiation is emitted by all objects, thermography makes it possible to "see" one's environment with or without visible illumination.
