thyroid

Tag details

The thyroid is an important endocrine gland in vertebrate anatomy. It is located in the neck, below the thyroid cartilage (or Adam's apple).

The thyroid gland has important functions within the human body. It controls the rate of energy expenditure, creates proteins, and controls our sensitivity to hormones. The thyroid also produces a series of hormones, of which the most important are triiodothyronine and thyroxine. These hormones regulate growth and metabolic rate, which can affect many other bodily functions.

An under active thyroid will produce an insufficient amount of hormones, which can lead to imbalances within the body. Common symptoms of hypothyroidism include weight gain, cold intolerance, bradycardia and baldness. Iodine deficiency is the leading cause of hypothyroidism across the globe. An overactive thyroid can lead to weight loss, muscle weakness, heat intolerance, excess sweating, palpitations and increased appetite. Graves' disease and tumors are among the world's most common causes of thyroid hyperactivity.
