If all of your knowledge and understanding about Tibet and the Tibetan people come from Brad Pitt's rendering of "Seven Years in Tibet," this article may be for you.

Tibet, sometimes referred to as "The Roof of the World" because it sits on the highest elevation in the world (Himalayan Mountains), has been a highly disputed and dubious country for centuries. Although the 13th Dalai Lama declared its independence from China on July 1912, that independence was never formally recognized by China (or any of the rest of the world, for that matter). The boarders of Tibet are still, to this day, a matter of uncertainty and doubt, as is its independence as a country.

Although Islam and Christianity have some following in Tibet, Tibetan Buddhism is the major religion of the region, and has had a strong influence over all aspects of life in Tibet. A very religious people, the Tibetan culture boasts art (paintings), architecture (rocks, wood, cement, and earth structures), cuisine (tsampa), festivals (Losar), and music (the singing bowl).
