A toilet is a waste receptacle that can either be installed in a building with indoor plumbing, a multi-passenger vehicle, or be part of an outdoor structure, whether portable or permanent.

In modern times, most outdoor toilets are portable. Portable toilets are designed to temporarily provide restroom services for a certain number of people before having to be emptied and sanitized.

Portable toilet rental is necessary for large outdoor events like concerts, rallies, and carnivals.

Portable toilets can be standalone booth units or restroom trailers with standard amenities. A portable toilet used for events is often called a "Porta Potty."
