Toilets are typical bathroom fixtures that allow for the disposal of human fecal and liquid waste. Animals, such as porcupines and mole rats may also construct and use toilets. Much like humans, they build separate rooms for these purposes. Human toilets are found in most homes, and are found in a room called a bathroom, so-named because of the tub fixture that is available for bathing. Toilets can include secondary design features like the urinal, which invites the user to stand during use, or a bidet, which supplies water in addition to toilet paper for washing.

There are many different types of toilets. Flush toilets rely on a mechanism that forces water through the fixture, so that the waste can be removed by way of large underground sewer systems. In more rural areas, home owners may not have access to the main sewage system of the local municipality and rely on septic tanks for their needs.

A septic tank is usually a small underground storage cavern, to which chemicals to break down the waste is added. The water is chemically and bacterially treated until it is safe to re-release the leech the liquid back into the water table, usually into a septic drain field. The break-down of these materials can produce excessive amounts of sulfides, which can leave the typical burnt looking patches in the grass above the tank.

Portable toilets are typically impermanent and used by the public during street festivals and concerts because they require no plumbing and can be kept in a temporarily more convenient area. These toilets store their waste in a tank below, where it is chemically treated. Chemical toilets are used when there is no such access to plumbing or external disposal. Later, the waste is collected by a larger and mobile tanker for disposal.

Pit toilets are toilets that don't even that that minimum of piping to draw the waste away from the human facility. The waste is simply collected into a pit that has been dug into the earth below the toilet area. Sometimes the pit is lined with lye to prevent potential contamination of nearby groundwater, and to discourage animals from penetrating the barrier. When the pit is full enough, a new pit is dug and the outhouse building is moved to that new location. The original pit is filled in with soil and left to breakdown naturally.
