Capturing nature at its worst on camera has officially been a goal of mankind since the 1950s when Roger Jensen, a North Dakota man, began to chase storms in his area. It wasn't until the late 1970s that storm chasing, primarily in the Midwestern U.S., really took off. With the evolution of technology, storm chasing has become an art with the ultimate goal of chasers being the perfect, up-close tornado video.

Tornado videos were first featured on television via the program "In Search Of...", then through a PBS documentary in 1985. Since that time, storm chasing and the showing of associated videos has spread like wildfire, especially with the help of Hollywood. Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt, Cary Elwes, and Jami Gertz starred in the 1996 movie, "Twister," which was centered on a plot of rival storm chase teams trying to be the first to film the actual inside of a tornado using various contraptions. While the action and special effects were not entirely accurate, this did not dissuade ordinary folks from trying their hand at capturing video of tornadoes.

In fact, being able to capture and share these tornado videos with the public has been made even easier as YouTube hosts tens of thousands of these video clips from both professional and amateur videographers.
