The market takes a breather after several weeks of blistering recovery from last winter’s doldrums. Commodities all around saw amazing advances. Crude oil rose 8.3% last week and has more than doubled over the last year. I remember taking my first car, a Honda (HMC) Civic, out for the first time and pumping gas for about $1.18 per gallon.

    Is it Worth it?

Oh, dear fucking god—the sky is falling and... brrrr... hell is freezing over! That's right, I have agreed with something that Jon Worth has said on the subject of politics. As Jon Points out, not only does the Common Agricultural Policy eat up 40% of the EU's budget (and it's responsible for a great deal of the fraud in that budget too), but it also screws up farmers in Developing Nations.

Deal for Pacman Likely to Get Done Within Days by Tom V. If the Cowboys get a deal done, we’ll hear about it within the next few days. “It’s probable, if we’re going to get something done, we’ll do it while we’re here at these meetings,” Jerry Jones said.

    Pacman Trade Imminent?

    http://www.nflminute.com/ 2008/ 03/ 31/ pacman-trade-imminent/

Pacman Trade Imminent? by Tom V. Pacman Jones has made it clear that his days with the Tennessee Titans are over. At a charity basketball game this weekend, Pacman signed a ball with the number 21 — the number of former Dallas great Deion Sanders — instead of his own number, 32.

The Engine Has Decoupled From The Train!

I won’t pretend that there aren’t times when the global metals markets perplex me. Take the last couple of months. The US has clearly been heading for a recession, mild or strong remains to be seen but certainly it’s going to get worse before it gets better. Europe or at least southern Europe is looking decidedly sick.

    Reed on the Block?

    http://theseattlemariners.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 03/ reed-on-block.html

Interesting bit from Shannon Drayer today: Of note, Jeremy Reed went 3 for 3 with a home run. Jeremy having a nice spring so far. The situation for him with the Mariners does not appear to be good as the team would prefer to have another right handed bat on the bench.

    And for the WTF files…

Keith Foulke was odd enough. But this? More rumblings that the A’s are on the lookout for a center fielder: According to a major-league source, Oakland recently inquired about the Dodgers’ Juan Pierre. Juan Pierre, who is still under contract for the next four years at $36.5 million.

    Johnson Watch

    http://athleticsforlife.com/ 2008/ 03/ 04/ johnson-watch/

I still don’t see a spot for Dan Johnson on this team, and was waiting for his name to come up in light of Carlos Delgado’s injury. But on Sunday, when Buster Olney laid out some possibilities, D.J. was not mentioned. “Dan Johnsoooooon!” I sang at the computer screen while reading the column.
