While the word "turkey" first elicits images of large birds and idiot drivers, the country of Turkey is as interesting to visit as its English name. Turkey is currently the only country in the Muslim world with a secular government; a fact that is both exciting and attractive to westerners who harbor fearful assumptions about Muslim life. In fact, Turkey is the perfect place to start learning about Arabic and Islamic culture.

Turkey is by far the most tourist-visited Muslim country, standing at number 8 in a 2008 ranking of top countries visited worldwide (the next closest was number 21 - Saudi Arabia). Interestingly, and despite rumors to the contrary, Turkey is a very safe country to visit. Visitors notice that the concerns in visiting Turkey are no different than in Europe and North America (some pick-pocketing or bag-snatching). While there are news stories relating to terrorist activities in Turkey, the odds are that a person is more likely to be involved in a car accident than a terrorist attack, which, if you are, could probably be attributed to those "idiot drivers" mentioned earlier.
