tv

TV stands for television, and is one of the most popular forms of mass media in the world. In 1928, Philo Farnsworth made the first modern television system.

TV is often cited as the killer of motion pictures, but also its savior as home video brought film to the average household with Video Home System (VHS), Digital Versatile Disc (DVD), and in 2003 Blu-ray (BD) and HD-DVD.

For decades, the cathode ray tube (CRT) version dominated but in recent years plasma display and liquid crystal display (LCD) versions have increased in popularity due to the expansion of high-definition (HD) television. These TVs will get a further boost when broadcast over-the-air signals will be closed on February 17, 2009 and switch to digital completely. Cable subscribers will see no effect, but antenna-users will need a converter box to continue receiving "free" TV.
