Under eye circles have always been a double-fisted mystery. Though some people have resorted to putting teabags under their eyes or even slices of raw potatoes, there has never been a real cure discovered for this strange phenomenon.

Dark blemished around the eyes, or "eye bags" as they are sometimes called, have been said to be caused by everything from lack of sleep to genetics to bruising to heredity. Allergies, asthma, and eczema can also play a roll. For example, if the eyes itch and the person rubs or scratches the skin around the eyes, this can also cause under eye circles. Also, for people who have a deep-set bone structure, the shadowing can cause the dark color under their eyes.

Any medications that cause blood vessels to dilate can cause circles under the eyes to darken. Also the lack of nutrients in a diet, or the lack of a balanced diet, can contribute to the discoloration of the area under the eyes. Iron deficiency is the most common cause of eye bags. Also, dark circles are likely to become more noticeable and permanent with age.
