    Planting for Fall Gardens

    http://surelyyounest.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 08/ planting-for-fall-gardens.html

We had a great weekend here in DC; we're having an anti-August which means it's not been horrifically hot or humid. Made for perfect weather for heading down to our community garden plot to plant some seeds. We put in fall, cool-weather crops: beets, lettuce, arugula, cilantro, a few more sunflowers (smile)...and plan to sow some beans and carrots by next weekend.

FOOD MAP DESIGNS: Gardening for the Space-Challenged

    http://www.inhabitat.com/ 2008/ 08/ 14/ food-map-designs-gardening-for-the-space…

We’ve all heard that growing food for ourselves is good for the planet as well as the soul, but between finding the space and then remediating the soil, growing an edible garden can go from being a simple idea to a gargantuan task.

    2008 Garden update - Aug 13th

    http://apaetoday.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 08/ 2008-garden-update-aug-13th.html

Time for another Garden Update. In the last week and a half or so, the garden has really started to come up to where I thought it should be a couple of weeks ago. Long spring, and sudden hot summer really prolonged the growth spurt, but it seems to be here now.I thought you guys might like to see what

    Cuba in the Pacific

    http://blog.greens.org.nz/ 2008/ 08/ 12/ cuba-in-the-pacific/

The Hive is looking on worried at six Cuban doctors working for free in Vanuatu.  Presumably it is worried about some sort of communist domino effect in the Pacific, as that is the sort of thing foreign affairs bureaucrats are paid to worry about.  And maybe the Hive is on to something - there are also 25 trainee doctors in The Solomons.

    FUTURE OF URBAN AGRICULTURE

    http://urbanhomestead.org/ journal/ 2008/ 08/ 11/ future-of-urban-agriculture/

“If every U.S. citizen ate just one meal a week (any meal) composed of locally and organically raised meats and produce, we would reduce our country’s oil consumption by over 1.1 million barrels of oil every week. That’s not gallons, but barrels.”* From Oily Food, by Steven Hopp. That was Then, This is Now.

In the Trenches: Composting Made Easy

    http://www.lime.com/ blog/ ng/ 2008/ 08/ 10/ giy_guide_trenches_composting_made_…

Composting’s a great way to get rid of unwanted table scraps and improve the soil, but sometimes the thought of maintaining a big box of rotting vegetable matter can seem a bit daunting to the weekend gardener — especially in a small urban space. But just because you can’t commit to a physical bin or worm ranch, doesn’t mean you can’t compost.

    The End Of Edge City?

    http://www.stoweboyd.com/ ground/ 2008/ 08/ gas-prices-appl.html

Gas prices are forcing a reverse migration, as suburbanites are reconsidering the car culture lifestyle: [from Gas Prices May Revive Cities - US News and World Report by Bret Schulte] On one hand, the story of the car, and the far-flung communities of huge homes and cul-de-sacs they enabled, is a testament to America's enormous economic success.

Hey Lucie, got any teeth in that beak of yours? The unsolicited media request haven’t stopped. That’s good, in a way, because it means that urban sustainability and food security are important and relevant issues.

    Inner-City Farms

    http://verdavivo.wordpress.com/ 2008/ 08/ 07/ inner-city-farms/

I grew up on a family farm and have had a vegetable and fruit garden the majority of my life. I’ve canned, pickled, dried, and frozen vegetables and frequented Farmer’s Markets and U-Pick farms to augment what I didn’t grow myself. Currently we have a CSA subscription and pick up our share of organic vegetables weekly.
