    No Skyscrapers for Jeddah

    http://xrdarabia.org/ 2008/ 08/ 19/ no-skyscrapers-for-jeddah/

Saudi Gazette, translating a piece from Asharq Alawsat, reports that the city of Jeddah’s infrastructure cannot support the building of high rise buildings. Whether it’s the road grid, sewage, or water distribution, the city just cannot handle the additional burdens skyscrapers would demand.

An opinion piece in the Province from Derek Moscato - a bike commuter himself, he says. The piece is troubling in that he really does not come up with very much of substance.  For example the stats show that cyclists here are seven to 70 times more likely to be injured, by trip or by distance travelled, than automobile occupants.

A great set of stories from the Toledo Blade

    http://urbanplacesandspaces.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 08/ great-set-of-stories-from-to…

These kinds of articles are important. Maybe not so much for thinking about large center cities like Washington--DC is far larger than Toledo or Grand Rapids, but the articles are relevant to commercial district revitalization issues regardless of the size of the community, but especially for submarkets within the city and region.

This week's Indianapolis Business Journal runs a great article on the need for significant upgrades to the IU natatorium and track and field stadium, as well as the Indianapolis Tennis Center. In June, when I was on a panel discussion with Eric Gordon, during Linden Lab’s birthday celebration, I was very inspired and impressed with his work - especially given my own interest in the use of virtual worlds for collaboration.  Now they are taking on a new project that I expect will raise the

Streetcars Back on the Rails in America

    http://www.treehugger.com/ files/ 2008/ 08/ streetcars-back-on-rails.php

(Michael Moose/Glaserworks) Terrence Mann said "If you build it, they will come"; I once said at a public meeting about a Toronto streetcar line that "investment follows infrastructure." Portland proved it; 10,000 residential units have been built and $3.5 billion has been invested within two blocks of its streetcar line since it opened.

    http://www.bythefault.com/ 2008/ 08/ 14/ peaking-your-interest-a-street-car-name…

Unlike most American cities in San Francisco, we never fell for the General Motors-led assault on American streetcars (trolleys). In the post World War II boom and rush to consumerism coupled with the flight to the suburbs American cities tore up their streetcar lines.

We’ve discussed the concept that inner ring suburbs like Millcreek are in the early stages of what could be a long decline. And that trend is not unique to Erie if you take a look at a really interesting discussion on the New York Times’ Freakonomics blog.
