The Usenet is a global distributed discussion system. Its users post and read public messages in so called newsgroups. The messages are often referred to as posts or articles.

It is in this regard similar to a web forum with the notable difference that a central server and administration is lacking. Usenet servers are maintained by different companies and organizations and all are loosely connected in a ever changing mesh which ensures that everything reaches its destination even if some servers are taken off the net.

Internet users who want to access Usenet messages need a news reader to do so. A popular news reader is Microsoft Outlook which is able to handle text content.

A large part of today's Usenet is made up of so called binary groups. Files like videos, images or programs are posted to those groups and available for download for anyone with a binary news reader.


Usenet traffic has been on the increase ever since its introduction. About 5.5 Terabyte of data is uploaded to Usenet servers every day.
