A user is a person who uses a computer system or Internet service. Users are generally identified by some type of login that distinguishes them from other system or service users. This can be a username and password for a web service, a username to log into an operating system or a user account for a software.


Users typically need to authenticate themselves by sending a username and password combination to the service or software. This is usually referred to as logging in.

An Operating system or web login (see Facebook login for instance) would for example describe the process of entering the username and password into a form on the computer or website to log into the service as a user.

User accounts on the Internet often use email addresses to identify users. Many websites display user accounts openly in the form of registered users or users who have subscribed to the website per email or RSS feed.
