The vampire is a creature from folklore that extends its life by drinking the blood or absorbing the life force of others. The vampire is so ingrained in the human psyche that it has variants in the mythology of most cultures. Vampires are usually human or have a human-like form, and are “undead,” that is to say a corpse that moves and acts as if alive. Vampires often have additional supernatural powers like flight, shape-shifting, weather-control, or mind-control.


Traditional vampires, like many folkloric monster, can be driven off, sealed out of a home, or destroyed by ritual. Vampires usually have some connection to village life, and in European and African mythology are frequently portrayed as departed relatives preying on their own families or as demons under the control of sorcerers. Undead vampires are frequently tied to funerary and cultural rites, for example in Christianized cultures, the vampire is frequently a suicide or unbaptized child risen from the grave.


In modern times, thanks to Romantic and Victorian fiction like Dracula and Carmilla, and later movie adaptations, the vampire became a creature of pop culture. In modern fiction it is frequently a tragic or romantic antihero rather than a villain or monster.
