Whether you're the vendor (providing services to a client), or you're the client (utilizing the services of a vendor), there are two good rules of thumb to remember:

If you're using a vendor, the rule of thumb is to always shop around. Compare prices. Compare service levels. Vendors love nothing more than a lazy client who continues to send them a check month after month and year after year and never bothers to check what the market is offering or what other vendors are charging.

If you're the vendor, the rule of thumb is to keep up with the industry trends. Imagine if you were a vendor who made the very best buggy whips for buggy drivers back at the turn of the century. Imagine your buggy whips were by far the best buggy whips money could buy, and everyone knew it. However, when Henry Ford introduced his Model T Ford, you and your company ignored the trends and advances in technology, and just kept manufacturing the best buggy whips for buggy drivers. It would not be long before you and your company became totally obsolete. Pay attention to the trends in the industry. Whether you are the vendor or the client, remember these two simple rules of thumb.
