Private Equity Eel A venture capital fund puts its money on sustainable seafood. Recently the San Francisco Chronicle has run a series of dispatches from the world of sustainable seafood, including a profile of CleanFish, the company that’s hoping to become the pescetarian’s Niman Ranch.

The government may soon come out with new investment norms for venture capital (VC), private equity (PE) and hedge funds to make their operations transparent and create a level-playing field for both the domestic and foreign players.

Venture Capital, deals, cleantech Gregory T. Huang wrote: Vancouver, BC-based Pangaea Ventures, an investor in early-stage cleantech and advanced-materials companies, announced it has closed a second fund worth $32 million (U.S. dollars). The new investors in the fund are Asahi Glass, Umicore, and Bekaert.

One of the earlier social networking pioneers, Friendster, has continued its Asian-led comeback with a $20 million infusion from IDG Ventures and previous investors [Benchmark, DAG Ventures, Founders Fund and Kleiner Perkins]. In addition to the cash Friendster has secured Richard Kimber, formerly Google’s South Asian Regional MD, as CEO.

Given all of the buzz and comments generated by Kevin O’Leary’s appearance on BNN TV last Wednesday (see prior post “O’Leary talks up his own book” July 31-08), it stands to reason that investors would want to know more about the O’Leary Global Equity Income Fund (OGE-UN:TSX).

Versant Ventures has pulled together $500 million to fund life science companies. The investment group says it will target approximately 30-35 medical device, biotech, and pharmaceutical investments in the U.S. with a focus on funding early-stage and seed opportunities.

TechCrunch has the story that Nokia has just added $150M to Nokia Growth Partners fund. The total capital in the fund is at the moment around $250 million. Some of the companies the fund has invested into in the past that have made it are BitBoys (sold for $44M), Global Locate ($143M) and Coding Technologies ($250M).

ADOTAS – Click on this: Clickable has raised $14.5 million in a Series B round led by Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund. Existing investors Union Square Ventures and FirstMark Capital also ponied up some cash. This brings Clickable’s coffers up to $22.5 million – not bad for a year of fund-raising.

Venture capital veteran Alan Patricof, the founder of private equity firm Apax Partners, occasionally posts his thoughts on the Huffington Post.
